How to repair a leaking Diverter Handle on a 4 or 5 Piece deck Mount Tub Filler

Problem:

Water is leaking under the diverter handle when it is activated. The probable cause is debris stuck in the diverter check valves.

Preparation:

The water supply shut off valves must be turned off- see article How to safely shut off a Kitchen or Bathroom Faucet/Shower

  • Recommended tools:
    • Philips screwdriver
    • A flathead screwdriver and a dust air cleaner might be needed
    • We recommend to cover the drain hole to make sure no parts are lost during the procedure.

Identify, repair or replace

The first step is to identify the diverter model, as the repair process varies depending on the specific model. To clearly distinguish between the two, we will refer to them as Type A and Type B.

You can identify by the shape of the handle or the check valves. The check valves are the 4 holes you'll see on the diverter top once you have removed the handle.

Type A

  • Handle top is cone-shaped.
  • Check valves are independent. If you press one down with a screwdriver, others will not move.
Step 1: Removing type A handle

  1. Unscrew cap
  2. Unscrew the screw
  3. Lift handle to remove
Step 2: Cleaning the check valves

You can determine which check valve is causing the issue by slightly turning on the water, the water will flow through the faulty valve. Once identified, and with the water still slightly on, gently press the check valve repeatedly until any debris is flushed out, the moving part returns fully to the closed position, and the water stops flowing. Repeat this process for the remaining openings if needed.

Replacing diverter rough:

If cleaning the diverter did not work and needs to be replaced, the part to be sent is:

  • 0-667 (diverter)

Type B

  • Handle top is more flat
  • Check valves are not Independent. If you push one hole, all the other holes will be pushed too because there is a round plate underneath.
Step 1: Removing type B handle

  1. Cap is snapped on. You can use a flathead screwdriver to pop it out
  2. Unscrew the screw
  3. Lift handle to remove
Step: 2 Cleaning the check valves

If the diverter uses a plate, keep the plate pressed in and do not turn on the water. Use a compressed‑air jet, similar to those used for cleaning computer keyboards to blow air into each opening to clear any debris. Once done, slightly turn on the water to check for leaks and repeat the process if necessary.

Replacing diverter rough:

If cleaning the diverter did not work and needs to be replaced, the parts to be sent are:

  • 0-667 (diverter Type A as Type B is not available anymore)
  • 0-615
  • 1-924* (diverter handle + *finish)
  • 2 x 7-146 (nylon hose)

*Access under the tub is needed to replace diverter rough
