Before doing any repair, you should turn off the water supply to the faucet. Failure to do so may cause flooding or injury.

How can I find my shutoffs?

You will first need to determine where the faucet shutoffs are located. Generally, they are located under the sink, in a closet access behind a shower or in an access panel around the tub, or they could be integrated to your faucet (like stop valves on a shower rough body). There are some cases in which the shutoffs will be your main home shut off. Note that this will turn the water off to the whole home. It is usually found near your home water entry, meter or hot water tank (either in your basement, outside wall, garage, crawl space or close to the street).

Once you have located the shutoffs

  • Rotate the shutoffs until they are tightly closed. If you choose to turn water off from the shutoff valves integrated to your equipment, refer to the instructions for that equipment.
  • Turn the faucet/shower handle(s) to the open position to insure the water is completely off and faucet is drained of residual water
  • Turn the handle(s) back to the closed position.
