How to replace a cartridge in a thermostatic freestanding tub filler

This article explains step-by-step how to replace a coaxial cartridge in a freestanding tub filler model XX39 or XX37.
Preparation:

Important: Turn off the water supply to the tap before starting. This faucet is not equipped with shut-off valves, so you'll need to turn off the main water supply to the house. Then open the faucet again to empty it of residual water. Failure to do so could result in flooding or injury. 

  • Recommended tools: 2.5mm allen key, adjustable wrench. Cleaning could require white vinegar and a soft brush.
Instructions:
Step 1 - Identify and disassemble handles

  • Volume handle : Lever 
  • Temperature handle : Lever
  • Exposed screw cap : Yes

Disassemble

  • Temperature handle : Textured dial
  •  Exposed screw cap : Yes

Disassemble

Identify

  • Volume handle : Lever, knob or cross 
  • Temperature handle : Knob
  • Exposed screw cap: No

Tip: To Remove the temperature knob:

a) Press

b) Lift

Step 2: Unscrew the retaining nut

Models with O-ring

O-ring locations should they fall out. Hold in place with a little plumber's grease

Models without O-ring

Step 3: Pull out cartridge, clean and install new cartridge

Model XX37

Inspect cartridge seat, remove debris and/or blue gasket and, if necessary, clean with a 1/2 vinegar 1/2 water solution and a soft bristle brush.

Insert the new cartridge ensuring that the 2 position pins are aligned with the 2 position holes on the seat

 

 
Step 4: Reassemble
Screw the retaining nut back on and reassemble the handles in reverse order.
