How to Tap Out the Allia Sink

How to Tap Out the Allia Sink

Warning: If you choose to tap out the holes yourself, you do so at your own risk. ROHL LLC. can cut holes at the warehouse for $10 per hole- at no risk to you.

* A video is available free of charge

Tools Needed :

  1. Nail Set
  2. Hammer
  3. Goggles- Very Important-- do not attempt this without adequate protection for your eyes.
  4. Felt Marker
  5. Tape Measure

* DO NOT ATTEMPT TO KNOCK OUT HOLES IF THE  SINK IS ALREADY INSTALLED

  • Place the sink on a flat surface
  • Measure to the center of the hole to be knocked out. The pre-formed knockout is 4" from the center to center of the hole. Mark this with the felt pen. Next, mark from the back edge  2 1/4" to intersect the 4" mark.
  • The second hole is 4" from the center of the 2nd hole , or 8"  on center from the center hole. Then again, measure from the back edge 2 1/4" to intersect with this mark.
  • Using a nail set, which you can purchase at your local home improvement store, first put the nail set down on the mark. Try and break through the surface. Do not hit it hard. This will cause the nail set to slide off the smooth surface. We want to make sure that you are carefully cracking through the surface. Slowly make concentric circles (like a pinwheel) on the surface.
  • After the above step, you will start getting a feel for how hard you can hit the sink. Using an "artistic touch" -do not try to "punch" the hole out quickly. Any hard hitting in trying to  crash through the glaze will result in breakage. Use a more " touch" like method, using smaller "hits" with an "artistic" touch.
  • Soon you will hear a "pop" - but for the most part, most of the "hole" will remain on the top of the sink. This is the point where the "carving" comes in. Take your time, be patient. Slowly carve away. Don't carve away to much. Take 5 or 10 minutes per hole.
  • Have your valve at hand. Keep measuring until you have enough room for your faucet, soap dispenser, or air gap. Don't make the hole too big. The escutcheons will not cover the hole if you happen to chisel or carve too much away. Obviously you want to do as professional a job as possible.
  • Once the initial "chipping" with the nail set has been done, you have scratched the smooth surface and your tool will grip better, and won't slip as easily.
