Replacing a cartridge in a XX43-XX83 valve
This article explains how to install a coaxial cartridge in a valve XX43 (single handle assembly) or valve XX83 (double handle assembly)

Preparation: |
Important: Turn off the water supply at the faucet before starting. You can either turn off the main supply to the house or close the shut-off valves if the faucet is equipped with them. Then open the faucet again to empty it of residual water. Failure to do so could result in flooding or injury.
- Recommended tools: 2.5mm allen key, Phillips and flathead screwdriver (if you remove the plate), adjustable wrench, soft brush

Step 2: Remove the plate (if you are shutting off the water supply through the service valves; if you are shutting off the water supply main to the house, go to step 4). |
Plate without exposed screws
a) Remove finish plate b) Unscrew screws and remove back plate |
Plate with exposed screws
a) Unscrew screw cap b) Unscrew screws and remove plate |
Step 3: Shut off water supply through service valves |
Single handle assembly valve XX43Using a flathead screwdriver, turn the service valves 1/4 turn to bring them upright. Then open the tap to empty the residual water Service valve model may differ from one shown above, but the way it opens and closes is the same. |
Double handle assembly valve XX83Using a flathead screwdriver, screw in the service valves completely. They will be accessible from an angle. Then open the tap to empty the residual water **Early models with double handle assembly had no valve on the rough to shut the water off. |
Step 4: Remove and clean the cartridge |
a) Unscrew the decorative retaining nut b) Pull out cartridge |
Inspect interior and seat, remove debris and/or blue gasket and if necessary, clean with a soft bristle brush. |
Flush the valve and lines by slightly opening the service valves on each side alternately for 20 seconds (See step 3). Be careful not to burn yourself |
Step 5: Install the cartridge |
A) Check underneath that the blue gasket is present and that the check valves are correctly positioned. |
B) Make sure the 2 locating pins are aligned with the two holes of the valve seat. Once the cartridge is installed, try twisting it to check that the pins are correctly positioned in the holes. C) Hold the cartridge in place and thread the retaining nut, ensuring that the locating pins remain in place in both holes. D) Screw the retaining nut all the way in and move the cartridge slightly up and down and from right to left to ensure that it is fully seated in the nut. |
Step 6: Reassemble |
Open the service valves and put back the plate. Reassemble the handles by following the steps backwards. |
