Perrin & Rowe Thermostatic Cartridge Change/Installation Exposed and Concealed

Tools Required

3mm Allen key, Thermometer, Adjustable Wrench

Preparation:

Shut water supply to the faucet off: Important: Turn off the water supply at the faucet before starting. You can either turn off the main supply to the house or close the shut-off valves if the faucet is equipped with them. Then open the faucet again to empty it of residual water. Failure to do so could result in flooding or injury.

Models U.5585BO & U.5555BO
Changing the thermostatic cartridge

Change the cartridge if:

a. The cartridge handle is stiff or frozen

b. There is no change in temperature when you move the handle

**Warning: If you cannot adjust the temperature with the handle, check the cartridge with the dome off before you change the cartridge. The spindle for the thermo cartridge may not be making contact with the inside of the dome. Because the handle has its own tension, you cannot tell by twisting the outer handle if there is contact on the inside.

If you have to change the cartridge (this is a frequently misdiagnosed problem) follow the directions:

How do I access the cartridge on the:

1. Exposed:

a. On the exposed system, you do not need to remove the lever. The dome is removed with the lever intact to expose the cartridge. There are 3 sets screws (3MM) on the bottom of the body that are removed. The two outer screws have pins on the inside that will fall out when the screw is removed. With the set screws removed, rock the dome back and forth to work the dome off the body.

2. Concealed:

a. On the concealed unit [U.5585BO], the dome does not have to be removed. Unscrew the two faceplate screws and remove the faceplate (on older units, there may be only 4 faceplate screws). On Integrated diverter models [U.5555BO], remove the volume control lever.

Once the cartridge is accessible, the procedure is the same for replacement:

1. Turn off the water

2. Remove the locking nut and alignment pin

3. Pull the cartridge from the body using a pair of grips or adjustable wrench, with a side-to-side turning motion to release to O-rings

4. Return 9.21557/brass stem adaptor for the new cartridge

Note: On concealed units, take care to prevent any water from going in the inside of the wall.

 5. Inspect for debris on the inside of the cartridge cavity. If debris is there, remove and clean the screens on the inlets (if there are no screens on the inlets, take the time to get them [9.31556]).

6. The new cartridge:

a. Flush the system.

b. Install the brass stem adaptor [9.215577] with the hole in the brass OVER THE BLACK LINE ON THE STEM of the cartridge.

7. Wet the O-rings and slide the cartridge into place. There will be some resistance until the cartridge “snaps” into position.

8. Put the alignment pin in the groove and tighten the brass holding nut. Do not overtighten.

  9.  Check the setting on the cartridge. The black dot seen through the hole on the brass 9.215577
should be aligned with the groove on the top of the shaft. Before you install the trim, make sure the 9.215577 adaptor is in place

Note: We suggest testing the cartridge with the dome or trim off. Use a thermometer set at 100 degrees (see page 3)

Adjusting the Temperature on the U.5585BO or U.5555BO Rough vales from Perrin & Rowe

1.  Remove the two faceplate screws to access the cartridge.

2.  With a thermometer, measure the output at an unrestricted outlet – shower arm with no shower head, for instance, or a hand shower outlet.

a. A thermometer is the only way to be accurate.

3. Turn the cartridge in small increments to adjust for 100 degrees in temperature.

a. Clockwise for hotter temperatures.

b. Counterclockwise for lower temperatures.

Please note, for custom setting:

a. for less hot water, with the faceplate off, adjust the spindle clockwise – small increments – to the desired temperature. I would not go more than 3-5 degrees down and test with the faceplate on. For every degree of hot water you lose, you gain in cold water.

b. Keep adjusting until the right temperature is attained.

4.    Reinstall faceplate with the lever at 6 PM. That is the factory setting.
